The rationalization and restructuring of National Grid operational centres presented a number of opportunities for the improvement of existing workplaces, and the re-organisation of storage and distribution areas. The aim was to establish appropriate and flexible accommodation standards for office, operational and storage areas. The response presented a series of components that could be configured to suit various site requirements and conditions while providing high quality workspaces to support National Grid’s network operations.
The proposals achieved predictable construction costs through standardization and the use of repeated, pre-assembled elements. Detailed costs and life cycle analyses were conducted on two tests sites in Birmingham and London. In each case the residual value of land released by rationalizing the operations centres significantly offset development costs.
